Review: A Quiet Place

Review: A Quiet Place

As you may expect from the title, this was not a film to bring noisy snacks into the cinema. A Quiet Place wasted no time with explanations or filler as the film jumped right into Day 89 of the post-apocalyptic story of survival. Fearsome wendigo-alien creatures roam the lands and will prey upon any of civilisation – but only if they make noise.

Directed by and starring John Krasinski, alongside his real-life wife, Emily Blunt, the horror film tells the story of a family of five, who are all alone, having survived this version of a world-gone-wrong. Music is used well to help build tension and creates an eerie atmosphere throughout, adding suspense to ensure the audience are constantly on edge. This is done effortlessly, given that there is such a succinct lack of sound, and so when there is noise, this is done with impact.

We learn that the killer creatures are completely blind but hyper-sensitive to sound so anything from a door closing to a vase being knocked over will alert their presence. A Quiet Place entrusts the viewer enough to piece the story together, which it really has to since there is barely any dialogue. One such scene shows sections of the floor which have been painted over, which quickly becomes apparent is to show which parts will not creak.

The film has so little conversation that I only realised afterwards that we never got to know the names of the family and so had to infer to them simply as dad, young girl or even Emily Blunt. Overall I found this movie excellent. The post-apocalypse genre has been done a great deal in the last 5-10 years so telling a different kind of story is necessary to differentiate from the rest, which it does well. The movie focuses on the living and gives full credit to the viewer and creates an entry into the horror franchise that will be memorable, in its uniqueness. A Quiet Place is an on-the-edge film that will leave viewers speechless.

A sequel to ‘A Quiet Place’ was recently announced and is scheduled for 2019, but in the meantime go and check out this terrific movie – and then leave some comments below with your thoughts.
